It sounds to me like you want to use a Webhook with customer.subscription.updated to then update your database/report for when you change the Price on a Subscription

I see, so hold on to the current price of the metered item at any given time, then check that rather than the api before calculating, that makes sense

This tool won't be used too often, so it would be nice if I could just pull historical data without having to set up webhooks, but maybe not possible
