I subsequently update the default payment for that customer.
What exactly are you doing? Are you switching to another previously saved payment method (like another card) or is your customer on your page entering new payment method details?
The idea is the customer could add a new payment method, then set that method as default, and finally retry the failed payment or something equivalent using the API.
Gotcha so a better flow in this case is usually to collect new payment method details to pay that Invoice first
