I have archived the old prices added new default pricing

The existing subscriptions will keep their existing price. At the moment the subscriptions need to be modified to use the new price one-by-one

so all active subscriptions in system need to be modified to use new price? even if the prices are archived?

Yes unfortunately that is the case. Archiving a price just prevents it from being used in the future. I definitely get why that is inconvinient and we've had work to address this though I'm not sure where it is at the moment. If you reach out to our support team they may be able to help you here but otherwise 1-by-1 updating via the API will likely be the best way to go
