I'm afraid this will not be possible. The coupon redemption will be counted as soon as it's set in the subscription with invoice created.

If you wish to consume the coupon only when the payment is made, it can be only be done within your own system, i.e. monitor the redemption at your end instead of using Stripe

alright cool, I'll mention there as well.
another small question - does Stripe Checkout handle this differently? What happens if someone tries using a Coupon in a Checkout session (as opposed to Payment Element) and then abandons the session - does the coupon get consumed?

Customer can't use coupons in a checkout page, they can only use promo codes

alright and that means that this kind of a situation cannot happen with Checkout (i.e. a redemption being counted without an actual purchase) ?
