Invoice URL and PDF will only be available after the invoice is created. With upcoming invoice, the invoice isn't created yet, so you won't be able to get invoice URL or PDF

What's the best way to take the invoice object JSON and turn it into something presentable that resembles the final invoice?

It'll depend on what you're going to show to the customer. Mostly it'll be items and amount related details

Is there no standard way to do this? I'm concerned about missing details such as taxes, credit balances, discounts etc.

You can look for those relevant details in the invoice object if that's something you're going to display to customers
