in test mode. i click 'view dashboard as X". then go to payments and can see the payments received from the parent connect account. but the payments show up w/o a description.

What if you click on the Transfer in the Connected account?

Because in the Platform you are viewing the Transfer, and in Connected account it's the Payment.

These are distinct objects, and the description lives on the Transfer.

But yeah, it would make sense to show the Description there.

correct. and i can see it when i click transfer. i guess its splitting hairs. i just would prefer it to show here instead of the "py__"

You can edit the Payment description yourself, but I understand that's not ideal.
