What kind of discount or promo code you set up? Could you also share the example subscription ID (sub_xxx) for both scenarios?
in scenario 1: $150 off. I created a phase to remove the discount on 12/10 in a test clock. sub id: sub_1N3UHuD8utvBTCheePEK8jEf
in scenario 2: $150 with a 1 month expiration (set up at the coupon level), also in a test clock. sub id: sub_1N3TX9D8utvBTChejigQuEnT
Since your coupon is $150 off, it doesn't have proration
Scenario 1 - It will deduct up to $150 in the billing cycle. In https://dashboard.stripe.com/test/logs/req_ayZEOp7R4dgubRl, the coupon is set to end at 2024-01-10 08:00:00 UTC in phase[0]. Since 1/1 still has $150 off, $150 discount is applied ($249-$150=$99). In 2/1 which the discount is removed, full price of $249 will be charged.
Scenario 2 - Similar as scenario 1 that the coupon doesn't have proration. On 6/1, the coupon is still within 1 month of validity
So is this just a symptom of Stripe's expected behavior? The coupon simply doesn't prorate?
Yup! The coupon will be applied entirely to all the invoices during the coupon validity period: https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/coupons#coupon-duration
