Hi 👋 my understanding is that is not correct.
When you process an off-session payment through Stripe, by first setting up a payment method for off-session usage, we request an exception from SCA/3DS for that transaction since you've told us the customer isn't around to complete the authentication challenge.
It is up to the issuing bank to decide whether they will grant that exception, and if not then a 3DS challenge may still need to be completed for the issuer to approve the transaction. Your flow will need to be able to detect these scenarios and have a flow to bring your customer back on session to handle the authentication.
Reading through the additional context.
I've not heard of being able to disable frictionless authentication before, so I would recommend following up with your account manager if this is something they said you'd be able to do.
Okay, thanks @spare helm
I guess more broadly we're wanting to know if and how we can influence the proportion of transactions getting the frictionless flow for those setup transactions.
For example, if we changed it to a $1 or $10 transaction when the user is setting up their card are we more likely to get a higher proportion of transactions getting challenged?
My understanding is that decision is made by the issuing bank as well, and that we don't have insight into how they make a determination of which authentication style to use.
