As far as I know, you can only apply one coupon per subscription.
Not sure if applying it on the customer would have any effect as the discount is considered when you create the sub 🤔 (not 100% sure, but you should be able to test it in testmode)

The only other alternative I can think of is that you issue credit notes to your customer which covers their subscription's invoices for the next X months.

The credit balance applies to next finalized invoice

Yea, but it applies to the whole subscription

E.g. if subscription price is $100/m, and the item inside it is only $6 - we may credit $60 for the "free year" but they'd be charged in the first invoice, along with $40 remaining

So it's not quite a trial, just upfront discount in that case
