my use case has one subscription per account and the user is able to add other products to their subscription. So every time I update their subscription I need to stipulate proration=none?

okay, last question. does the behavior of a product on the user's subscription revert to prorated every month or is setting proration=none once it's added enough?

Not sure I understand. Prorations only come into play when something changes on the subscription. By default they're applied. So, if you don't want prorations on an update, you need to specify proration=none each time
