basically I want to have an invoice that fails when trying to charge it

We have a large number of test cards you can use but I don't think we have ones that will change the response based on the amount of the charge

so no way to have a specific failing invoice (while other invoices should charge fine)?

I did look at those test cards already

You would need to update the Customer's default payment method to a card that fails, charge the invoice and see it fail, and then change it back.

Or

you can set default payment methods for each Subscription
