This is actually expected behavior, the status of a subscription is based on the status of the latest invoice. So unfortunately with that config I don't think it is possible for a subscription to go past due automatically from an invoice not being paid

I think you may just have to listen for webhook events for the invoice going past due and then making the API calls to cancel/update the related subscription yourself
