The two ways to do that would be a trial that lasts a year or a subscription schedule where the user is on a $0 price for however many years

i don't think the trial solution would work since I wouldn't be able to charge for the subscription. In the subscription schedule scenario, I'm assuming you mean

Schedule to charge $x for year 1
Schedule switches to a $0 price for year 2,3,4?

You could also do a yearly recurring price and have a price for one-off one year items
