Oh I have found it! It's the current expected behavior and sorry we can't preserve the trial via Customer Portal. You would need to either

  1. Don't give the customer their Customer Portal link until they finish trial
  2. Don't use Customer Portal but build your own UI and call API directly. This way you can preseve the trial period
