Easy mixup to make! The id is more of an internal identifier (more useful to you and to us), whereas the code/promo code is the value that you'll provide to your Customers (usually something shorter and easier to remember).

Archiving it should achieve much of the same affect. It won't be usable and it won't show up when listing products unless you specifically look for deactivated ones
