Might be a faulty card. Are you able to locate the attempted charge in your Stripe Dashboard developer logs?

no, the terminal isn't sending anything in. I did try it with a real card in the reader and it read the chip just fine and failed the transaction as expected with the test_mode_live_card error code.

it says chip read error and when you do NFC it just beeps quickly at me.

Ahhh, okay. Yeah that sounds like a broken card. If you contact support and let them know a Stripe developer (e.g. two-shoes on Discord) told you that the card is broken, they should be able to send you a new one for free.
