in fact they usually do, for subscriptions
since subscriptions are prebilled at the start of the month
the invoice period is the preceeding month/period, and the interpretation is elapsed real time for which invoicing is "up to date", ie all items to be invoices up until X are being dealt with.
Some of those items, namely the recurring subscription items, will have periods going from today forward to the end of the period that is starting
the interpretation here is that this is the period of time the line item is paying for
