The only think you can customize for the display is the splash screen: https://stripe.com/docs/terminal/fleet/splash-screen

But it will be the same for all readers in the same location. So I don't think it will work for your use case.

so if i have a number of readers i would have to physically put something on them to identify them

Other option is to put a physical sticker on the device
That sounds like the best option.

my setup is x amount of apps, with x amount of readers available

the issue being all readers look identical except for the small sticker on the back with serial no but that may not be readable in a dark bar

Got it, then yes I recommend adding a physical sticker on the device.
