I think I've just figured out where it's going wrong

Yea that would make sense. You can also inspect your request logs to see whether the customer you expect is coming through on the request: https://dashboard.stripe.com/test/logs

Try hardcoding one cus_123 to confirm the behaviour, then sort out the issue with getting the customer value

If you attached the card to a customer, it would appear as a payment method on the customer page
