I do see that micro-deposit type can also be 'amounts', but I want to know for sure is it always 'descriptor_code' or 'amounts'

As far as I can tell, It would always have the descriptor code
but I'm only 99% certain, I'd recommend checking with our support team about this. They'd have a much better context about verification flow
