Good question. I am guessing this info isn't directly on the Checkout Session in the event objects that you are getting?

I believe that the shipping rate ID is prevalent

And I'm aware that a shipping rate can thereafter be fetched

#

But obviously don't want to have to fetch it if not necessary

I think it is necessary here unfortunately. We show that pattern in our docs for shipping rates https://stripe.com/docs/payments/checkout/shipping#handling-transactions
