It's not possible to add a return button but when creating the pricing table in your dashboard in the second step you could specify the redirect URL to let your customer return to your website once done from the Checkout session

I have that set up, but the problem I have is if the customer wants to "Back out" of the payment before completion, or if it fails and they just want to go back to our site. The above only works for success.

in that case they would have to use their browser back button
