One benefit I can think of is to avoid payment intent/setup intent from being used again. For example, when you run a promotion and has a discounted price on the PaymentIntent, but the customer does not pay in time. If customer comes back and same PaymentIntent is used again after promotion expires, cancelling PaymentIntent will avoid the discounted price being charged.

Is there expiration for them or do we need to manually cancel them?

There's no expiry. Manual cancellation will be required
