My understanding is that 3DS is driven off of SetupIntents and PaymentIntents is that correct? For a monthly subscription then where the payment method is the default is for the customer, where the first invoice is paid. Do I then need to look at the upcoming invoice after updating the payment method to see if it needs a 3DS check?

as I mentioned before, at any point in time, however you setup the card, the issuing bank might ask for 3DS (re-authentication)
