Have you seen this doc for BACS? It sounds like you would want to send out emails on setup_intent.succeeded for confirmation of signup related emails

it states The Confirmation of signup email must be sent as soon as you have collected payment details from your customer. Send this email when you receive the checkout.session.completed event for a payment method of type bacs_debit.
Gotcha, yes you can also do that event if you are using Checkout
we're not using checkout
Then you can use setup_intent.succeeded, that would be when the mandate is created here. That section also says:

Still looking, not seeing equivalent emails mentioned in our docs though so I am less sure. Do you have a doc you've been looking at that mentions what emails to send here?
