Yes, this is a Subscription payment.
The initial payment, the first time the user pays for a subscription.
if payment fails, we allow retries.
But when using SEPA, and the payment fails, the underlying subscription is deleted
Yet the PaymentIntent can be retried, and succeed.

Hello, codename_duchess had to step out but I can help in a minute. Working my way through those events now...
So it does look like this behavior is specific to SEPA.
SEPA Direct Debit payments are never automatically retried, even if you have a retry schedule configured for other payment methods.

SEPA doesn't retry payments so when a payment fails we automatically do what you have set to do in the "If all retries for a payment fail," on your billing settings page https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/billing/automatic

Which in this case is cancel the subscription. I think that that means that if you want to allow retries like this, you would need to change that setting to leave subscriptions as is and then add your own code to handle whether to cancel a subscription at the end of the retries. Otherwise it might be best to just reach out to your SEPA customer and set up a new subscription with a different PM
