This isn't something that we support out of the box so yeah definitely would need to DIY it.
Have you tested the flow you explained above?

No, we are in the brainstorming phase. We are trying to determine the best path to implement.

Having the user move funds into a connect account first seems like the path of least resistance so we will know how much is in that account and can minimize failures. That said, I'm not sure if anyone has another method.

I don't know if there is a recommended approach per se. Let me ask some of my colleagues to see if they've come across such usecases before

Thanks @spark yoke. I've seen split payments before between multiple users, but I don't think I've seen split payments from the same user with multiple payment sources
