I believe it will always ask for that to use as a fallback in case of hardwire disconnection.

how long does it take until it prompts for that?

I think it will error out immediately, but I don't know if it prompts you to enter wifi. I would recommend setting up wifi on all hardwired readers ahead of time so that there's redundancy and they can use ethernet as the fallback
