For ranged attacks. Is a "target in melee" defined as a model that is within its own melee range of one of its enemy models? Is it defined as a model that is within its own melee range of the attacking model? Within the attacking model's own melee range? What if the target doesn't have any melee attacks? Is it able to ever be considered "in melee?"

I can't seem to find this defined anywhere, and it's driving me insane.

What exactly does "Target in Melee" mean?

Basically, is this rule meant to make it difficult to shoot a guy with a sword when he's right in your face? Or is it meant to make it difficult to hit a target while it's engaged in melee combat like 4" away?

When a model is either engaged or being engaged they are in melee

You’re only obligated to shoot things that are engaging you if the other model has no melee range and you’re not engaged, you can shoot whatever you want, and if you are engaged the only way you can shoot someone else’s if you have gunfighter

#

And if u do have gunfighter and shoot at a person in melee they will get the +4

Gotcha, thanks for the clarify. I do feel as though the verbiage in that rule should say "A large or smaller-based model that is engaged or engaging in melee combat gains +4 DEF..." because "in melee" isn't as descriptive and difficult to find what it means. But I understand now, so all good!
