Make sure when you land you have spoiler brake on, and below 120-ish pull that stick full back for aero braking.
When you enter the break in an overhead, you keep the boards out all the way to touchdown

Compared to the Tomcat, the Phantom is a completely new story. It ain’t meant to loiter and oversee the battle space like the grand AWG-9 Phoenix Slinging Wizard Tower that is the F-14B. Its bread and butter is quick and dirty ground strikes and pop up surprise air attacks against unawares targets. Sure, if the area is pretty quiet you can stay airborne for a long time, especially if you AAR, but that INS WILL drift, even over the course of an hour or so, more so than the Cat. It’s super fun to learn, super hard to master, but very very very very worth it and rewarding when you manage to sneak a Sparrow kill on a modern Flanker or precision bomb with a GBU-8 or AGM-62 from stand-off range. She’ll punish you if you fly her like a modern craft, but she’ll reward hard work and dedication.
Once you’re ready, I’ll be there to give you the rundown. But head tracking and a good HOTAS and pedals are prerequisite.

when you get to the tanker the biggest thing you need to focus on is small, smooth movements, and formation work
a good trick to use when you're starting out, that honestly you can keep doing if you feel so inclined, is to set the wings to bomb mode, it makes the jet less susceptible to oscillations when you advance or reduce power
just line up behind the drogue as best you can and slowly move forward until you catch the basket, also using very fine throttle inputs will help keep the whole system stable, dont try and chase the basket, thats a mistake i make a lot tbh, if its sliding out of position just reduce power a little and reset

Real talk, the day I accidentally showed up, I barely had functional DCS knowledge let alone much traffic comms. Didn't realize that when they said to contact approach that there really was a guy running approach. Once I tuned in he was quite kind and got me vectored the correct way for landing. Gent with a English accent if I remember correctly.

well, it depends
if there is no one inside of initial to do an overhead above you, you can request closed and just do a normal closed traffic pattern back around. if there are people there, ATC will probably have you go to the 'outside pattern' or break out and reenter
