Hey, so i'm a new player and have been looking at this game (but not played yet) and been planning on buying the age of darkness box and what list to build with it. after looking at it i made this list.

HQ:
Praetor with Falax blade and astartes shotgun
Chaplain with barb-hook and astartes shotgun
Warmonger in cataphractii with thunder hammer

Elite:
10 cataphractii terminators (5 pairs of lightning claws, 5 chainfists)
Contemptor (with melta cannon and fist with in built meltagun)

Troops:
2 units of 10 man tacticals with chain bayonets

1 unit of 20 despoilers with chainaxes, 4 power axes, nuncio-vox and vexilla

Heavy support:
Land raider spartan with hull lascannon, HK missile and pintle multi-melta.

plus artificer armor and caedere weapons in all sergeants.

I wanted to know from experienced people if this sounds like an okay list and what rite of war could be used on it

Gotta do <@&877303441716809749> so everyone can see it more easily.

No worries! Personally if I'm going to run tacticals, I'd run them in a big blob of 20. I don't care for power axes on the despoilers since it makes them go last, power mauls and spears are really solid options instead. Don't forget you can give the sergeant another melee weapon, you should probably go for Falax Blades.

#

ah nevermind, i see that last note about all the sergeants

#

you could probably skip the upgrade on the tacticals, but since it's only one squad it's not bad either

#

You'll really want to invest in Apothecaries soon too

#

I'd think about which Rite of War you want to play the most and use that to inform your decisions a bit

Berserker assault with +2” run and assault is really good rite of war with the downsides only really being you can’t charge multiple units and no allies
I actually think tacticals with chain bayonets is not a bad unit for world eaters. As long as you charge, you’re only losing 1 attack versus despoilers while maintaining efficacy while holding objectives with full bolters

Yea Power Lances on the despoilers is the way to go I think. Mauls are also good but lances strike first against most things so you can kill some before they even have a chance to strike back.

#

I would probs drop 1-2 of your HQs. Its a lot of points in 3 models at that game size.

ok so combining the tacticals in a blob, i like the idea of the power lances so thanks, i was thinking maybe excoriator axe in the despoiler sergeant because i expect the unit to have characters to fight the duels for him and murderous strike with shred could be usefull?

Excoriator axe is so bad though

#

Might as well give him a power fist

Falax is so good

#

I'm thinking about trying to get some rad missiles so rampagers can ID on the charge

undone nova
#

missiles won't help there much, just grenades

long whale

#

grenades affect the whole unit, missiles just affect models that have been wounded already IIRC

#

That's the good thing about Red Hand Destroyers, but they're so expensive you're better off just skipping them, the gimmick is too pricy

Oh yeah, I expect it soon

#

I like them for Arian Zorze (World Eater Apothecary for Fabulous Bill in 40k.)

#

And for their utility

undone nova
#

like breaching instead of rending

#

or down to 5+

spice relic
# long whale ok so combining the tacticals in a blob, i like the idea of the power lances so ...

This is why you want falax on the sgt. The axe is unweildy so you will be dead before you even get to swing it. Most characters will also have a 2+ save so even if you get a murderous strike off they will make their save. Falax lets you strike at initiative 5 in a challenge and rending gets through the 2+ save of artificer armour. Its a good way to get their sgt before he can get you.

spice relic
#

Also you dont really need 5 chainfists. 2 will be fine to open up vehicles and beyond that they dont do anything better than powerfists

undone nova
#

Oh no, I totally agree, rending 4+ is disgusting

#

it's why I suspect they'll get nerfed, lol

spice relic
#

unfortunately with dreads exploding at S8 they auto death you

#

so lost a couple to that as well

long whale
#

Ok so by combining both tactical squads and changing 3 chainfists to lightning claws in the terminators i could sneak an apothecary in the despoiler squad, however that means my list will be made only of three infantry units, a dread and a vehicle, is that enough on the table?

#

Sidenote but in the future i’d like to play rampagers, what weapon proportion would you say is good on them? Full falaxs?😂

spice relic
#

Personally I like to go pretty min squads

#

have you come from 40k?

#

Those tacs are your only real scoring units so best to keep them in 2 squads and give you a chance to hold 2 objectives

#

The despoilers do score but with a blob like that you are probably sending them right up the middle, not primarily trying to hold objectives.

long whale
#

Yes that was pretty much the original idea, depoilers in the spartan in the middle while the terminators deepstrike and the tactics pretty much score/cover the sides, yeah i do come from 40k but i played imperial guard so not much experience with marines

One of the biggest differences with Heresy is there is no split fire. Everything in the unit has to shoot the same unit and you can only charge what you shoot at. It catches a lot of people off guard at first.

#

So big squads can be good but also can really limit you

#

also smaller squads can really limit what your opponent can do

#

So if you only have 3 inf units it makes it pretty easy to just focus fire them down and will really hurt if you fail a leadership or pinning test

#

20 despoilers in the spartan with a chaplain is good. Chaplain buff is a good reason to make it a big squad and its somewhat protected

#

Might want to split the others. I would probs split the terminators into 2 squads too

I feel like units of 10 just get wiped out, Despoilers are also Line, so you should park tacs on one objective and charge despoilers at the enemy objective

undone nova
#

but berserker assault is the only place i'd run rampagers without jump packs, haha

vernal flint
#

If you know you’re going to be within 12 after moving and don’t want to charge, tacticals can just fire bolters or make them run if it’s despoilers

#

I’ve always played with an army with a “must charge” rule and very rarely have I gotten into a situation where it’s affected me.

spice relic
#

Not being able to multi charge is actually getting quite annoying

spice relic
#

2 x10 on the same objective would do a better job than 1 x 20
