Legion centurion 105
Plasma pistol
Champion
Paragon blade
Legion apothecarion detachment 100
+1 apothecary
Artificer armor x1
Legion tactical squad 270
+10 troops
Artificer armor
Nuncio vox
Vexilla
Chain bayonet
Legion tactical squad 100
Spartan 425
Flare shield
Hull lascannon
How's this list look for a 1k point learning game? Haven't played since 7th Ed so the rules are pretty similar to what I remember

The 20 man tac squad is joined by an apothecary and the centurion in the spartan to punch face while the second tactical squad stays back on an objective. Assuming it's not a kit everything game.

I would say the sparten in 1k is a bit overkill

So at 1k points you don't need big squads of Marines
I would suggest dropping the apothecary and taking 2 10 person squads

#

Drop the Spartan for either a smaller tank or some terminators

I feel that you don't have anything very hitty and that the 20 man tacticals is a bit much, Clair sums is it quite well, go for some terminators, a dreadnought or a support/ heavy squad.

#

Yeah a Spartan in 1k is crazy

#

Dreadnoughts or a predator/sicarian maybe

#

Even a kratos would be terrifyingly effective

ebon trellis
#

Yeah, Spartan is not something you want at 1k. Contemptor and some termies will do you better.

twin idol
#

Delgatus and pride you always have a risk of facing at low points

#

I'd have something to deal with a dread and some TEQ

ebon trellis
#

Also, at a point level this small, you want multiple scoring units, not one big blob with an apothecary.

twin idol
#

And yeah, you have 270 pts plus 100pts all on one squad; that's potentially 4 squads equivalent you'll face

#

20 marines won't hold up against that firepower

ebon trellis
#

Upsides of small blobs are versatility, they can easily hold multiple objectives and your opponent can overkill several small squads, wasting firepower on them.

twin idol
#

God forbid your opponent has something like a whirlwind scorpius

#

Bye bye blob

ebon trellis
#

Exactly, you have way more protection from Blast weapons as a smaller squad.

#

To put this into perspective, I'm running lots of 5 man squads in a Headhunter Leviathal. The only time I want to add bodies to those squads is when I've run out of slots to fill with smaller ones

I am thinking he has just the starter box thats why there is a Spartan so let's suggest picks from the starter box shall we

twin idol
#

For a learning game, I'd suggest something like a centurion (100ish), some terminators (175pts), 3x tacs (300pts), a dread (175pts) and maybe something else (more terminators?)

ebon trellis
#

Yeah, absolutely, I was just explaining why smaller squads are better under many cases. From the box, the Contemptor and 2 5 man Cataphractii squads. Alternatively, keep the Apothecary and attach it to a 10 man Cataphractii blob.

twin idol
#

Just get used to having lots of squads on the board with lots of movement and reactions

#

A Spartan doesn't make for a fun learning experience

#

They demand a specific counter in the form of lascannons or flanking

#

It's very difficult to deal with

ebon trellis
#

Also, the other major upside of smaller squads for Alpha Legion in specific is that you get to give your sergeants a Power Dagger and Power Fist for +1 attack with the fist.

twin idol
ebon trellis
#

Aren't they? I could have sworn they were, my bad.

twin idol
#

They are sudden strike (1), breaching now

ebon trellis
#

Ah, yeah, sorry about that, I have no idea how I got my wires crossed there.

twin idol
#

Don't worry, it's taken me a while to get over

#

But your right it's a great cheap option for every character

ebon trellis
#

Anything that can take a Chainfist gets +1 attack unless I'm mistaken.

twin idol
#

Aren't chainfists, paragon blades, thunderhammers and power fists all specialist?

ebon trellis
#

Chainfists don't appear to be unless I'm missing something. Melee, Armourbane, Unweildy unless there's somewhere else that says it.

#

Regardless, Power Daggers are actually decent in their own right. Strike first with them on the charge and if you wound on a 5 it's AP2. It'll do more work than you'd expect on anything without an Invuln.

woven radish
#

Chain fists sadly only come on terminators

ebon trellis
#

Yeah, decent choice for your Cataphractii Sergeants.

#

But also, just good on any sergeant. It's as well as not instead of and it's cheap. Having that option isn't going to be a bad thing.

viral glade
#

Yeah, it's a typical all eggs in the same basket 1000pts list.

#

I don't really like it. I'd rather take a Chaplain instead of a Champion for that big blob of marines.

twin idol
#

also a good point

#

free power weapon

#

still a solid consul

glass fox
#

Power daggers are best in large numbers, as a sort of defensive weapon
A single captain won't do much, but a full squad of headhunters can use them to take out a few attackers before they get hit

#

They are also a cheap way to get an extra attack

twin idol
#

also very cheap AP3/2

#

they do have a huge downside in S3

#

but since they are breaching 5+, it typically means when they wound, they wound at AP2
