I decided to get into the Horus Heresy with the release of the Age of Darkness Box and after fucking about with the rules for a little while, I've come up with a preliminary 2.5k points list using mostly the models in the box and would love to get some criticism before I begin painting. Most peculiar loadout choices are due to the box limits/lack of bits in my bits box (such as lightning claws on the red butchers). Here's the list:

Basic plan is for the death guard to stay a bit further back and shoot up the board while the world eaters yeet themselves up in a battle bus of death with the butchers, praetor and primus medicae.

get that praetor a paragon blade!

#

he'll lose every dual he's in without ap 2

#

and bulk that legion command squad to 5! they're a great cheap unit in articer armour with 2 wounds!

knotty pelican
#

thanks, it shall be done! what would you take out to counterbalance the points? a single red butcher maybe?

viral grotto
#

also, how come autocannons on the HSS squad?

knotty pelican
#

mostly because I was a tad overeager and built a 10-man rotor cannon squad before realizing it might not be the best idea

#

so now I'm kinda stuck with em so I was thinking of converting five into autocannons

Red butchers aren't very good

#

Get rampagers with falax blades

viral grotto
#

uh, for the paragon blades, i'd drop the havoc launcher on the contemptor?

Get that mediacae and a chaplain with falax blades and charge like your life depends on it because it do.

upbeat inlet
knotty pelican
#

but I'll definitely consider a chaplain!

viral grotto
#

yeah, so you're dumping a lot of points into a "deathstar" unit without AP2?

upbeat inlet
#

With rampagers if you can access them

viral grotto
#

which mean they'll get bullied by other deathstars

upbeat inlet
#

Otherwise no point to a chaplain in a butcher squad

viral grotto
#

they've blend tacticals, but you don't need a 8 man squad with a chaplain+praetor+spartan to blend tacticals

upbeat inlet
#

That's why rampagers with Falax blades over red butchers

viral grotto
#

it's awkward

#

i'm having the same problem with deathshroud atm

upbeat inlet
#

15 rampagers, chaplain, Apothecary, falax blades on everyone but the apothecary. Deathstar that can mulch so very much.

#

Does death guard have good access to rad weapons at all?

Because the rampagers with Falax are S6 on the charge which is great to mulch an enemy death star/terminator/command squad

only on the other rite of war!

#

which is not creeping death

upbeat inlet
#

It's a nice combo for dealing with multi wound enemies but not neccessary, great to nuke a praetor squad though, drop them to T3 and charge with Falax Rampagers.

If you get the charge declare a challenge with the chaplain and watch as his I6 ass merks a praetor if they fail a single save.

knotty pelican
#

thanks for the help, I'll take it into consideration and I'll see if I can't find some more bits to convert a few rampagers at my lgs

viral grotto
#

also, are you happy with your allied world eater getting fucked up by dangerous terrain

viral grotto
#

One in every six games the spartan will immobilise itself turn 1 in your deployment zone

knotty pelican
#

oh dear, that's a very good point

#

reckon the rite of war is worth it in that case?

The rite is good for slowing down the enemy, but your World Eaters want to get to them anyway. You could take The Reaping quite easily. As mentioned above Rad is pretty great with Strength 6, and it lets your Death Guard characters take Rad Grenades. You'd have to get them in combat as well (as your DG characters arent Best Buds enough to join World Eaters) but seems neat.

#

You don't get too much out of either DG rites though, which is fine really.

viral grotto
#

Just get it a dozer blade

hallow kiln
#

Oh yeah that works too 🙂

knotty pelican
#

can a spartan take a dozer blade?

#

because if it can I'd absolutely do that as opposed to not running the rite

#

the 10 WE tacticals will have to suffer but that's alright with me

I know but the chaplain gives them re-rolls to hit and from memory is I5 so if a praetor or enemy chaplain is there instead of just ditching a rampager to near certain doom you can have your chappy eat them with 4-6 attacks at I6

#

He's there for the re-rolls and to eat tough but not too difficult challengers. Anything standard and you might as well let a regular rampager eat the challenge(r).

#

Anything TOO difficult, primarchs, named and very powerful heroes/combatants and you definitely don't want him eating the challenge

you'll still be sad if a praetor comes at you, hitting on 5s SUUCCKKKSS
