I am just starting out, I have plenty of experience with 40k (been playing sense 5th edition. However have not played 30k at all. Here is my first attempt at a list with what i own/going to own

HQ: +

Replace the praetor's combat blade with a gun, or take another specialist weapon. Paragon Blade is a specialist weapon so unless you have another weapon with that rule you're losing an attack.

I think maybe you want something more to bring against armor, maybe drop the melta bomb on the tac sergeant in favor of a power fist or something

Alright, i took the melta away from the one sergeant to give the praetor a volkite serpenta

I moved around some points to give people powerfists

#

& the Destroyer Sergeant a thunder hammer

#

Although i guess i move more stuff around & maybe put in that next sun killer unit

#

and with the contemptor-mortis and kakophonii there's some good shooting to help you soften the enemy up while you close the distance

#

and the contemptor has the added benefit of helping you deal with enemy flyers should they come around

They'd only be able to assault hovering aircraft, but if you see aircraft at 1500 points then your opponents a dick haha

Personally I would drop the havoc launcher on the dreadnought as those points are better spent elsewhere. For example I would try to fit meltabombs on the whole assault squad if you can. I play Blood Angels and have learned to never leave home without meltabombs on assault squads; they've saved my bacon more than once.

As far as warlord traits go you actually just roll for them, although with Master of the Legion your praetor gets to roll twice and pick one of the two. It's kind of a weird holdover imo and we'll see if it changes in the new edition but for now you gotta roll for them. I'll see if I can get some screen grabs of the tables so you at least know which one you'd want to roll on.

Yeah, it is a little weird, mostly because there are some that are notably better than others. If they make them all say, D3 tables like Titanicus that would make more sense with like a legion specific option, but you can also pick in Titanicus so I dunno

but I believe that most people would be okay with scaling down, especially for stuff like Zone Mortalis because that's a lot of fun.

And there's a fan-made game mode called Centurion Mode, which restricts how many of a certain thing you can bring, as well as what you can bring

#

for instance in sub 2k games you can't bring more than one unit of dreadnoughts, leviathan dreads are right out and you can't bring a praetor

One thing I like about it is that tacticals can still present a large threat due to the volume of shots they can produce
