Most of my friends are waiting for duo mode to give the game a second chance, 3v3 is way too chaotic and punitive for new players to get into the game. I'm mostly stuck solo in the meanwhile.
Devs confirmed 2v2 is coming, do we have to wait season 1 for this ?

But the player count is currently so low it’s almost impossible to find players with 1v1 and 3v3 splitting the players. A third mode would be even worse currently

You cannot add another queue when the playerbase is already stretched thin.
If you want to replace mixed queue with a duos queue, then while you and your buddy might be happy, all of the groups of 3 friends will likely leave the game for one that has a trio queue.
It could be a net positive, depends on the numbers of how many players prefer trios versus those that prefer duos.

To give OP a better idea, there’s another beta game with ~100k downloads that has like 2 servers and still won’t do duos right now.
I honestly think when a lot of the hardcore players switch to crypt or night, it would be feasible to do duo with no fill on stock greenwood and be ok.
