Adding an icon to sidebar nav items?

I want to put a image/icon next to certain sidebar items, shown here by the red square. Is this possible 'natively' with some config? I found a way to put a "badge", but it appears to be only text and not custom components or images. I tried overriding the badge component, but either it doesnt work or I did it wrong.
