I'm surprised no one's mentioned rivers. They look great!They look cool, sure... but like... who cares? They've been working on the stupid river for a year now. It's beyond ridiculous that it's still occupying someone's workload.Edit: Okay I guess I was wrong. Maybe you guys are excited for the microscopic progress they've made on the river since last fuckin year.Hey!So other people in the comments have addressed most of these, but just to confirm. That isn't the same river. There are now 40 rivers saved out in the stanton system, and I generally generate a new river every time I do testing - so I'm always looking at a different one. For the person who said that maybe that one was an asset test, andhand placed - we don't have a way of manually directing a river, it's absolutely always using the erosion stuff.It's beyond ridiculous that it's still occupying someone's workload.Rivers are entirely my work (or the code is), but they aren't my entire workload. It's not even half. It's just what I talk about on the ISCs as it's the most visually exciting of the things I work on.To answer some other questions that I keep seeing pop up -Tributaries/waterfalls/multiple rivers leading into a lake/ocean etc are all coming. Most are blocked by our fairly limited water shading. This is actually what I'm spending Q4 on - proper flow mapping and water transitions. Important for many things in our games, including but not limited to rivers.Does the river get wider/thinner? Yes - I've just shown sections of similar width.Are we planning on using the river tool to generate other POIs (canyons, roads/tracks, etc)? Ohh yeah. This was all written with that sort of thing in mind. This will come. Also, using it to drive animal nests + other secondary POIs? Once we've got animal AI, I'm sure we'll use rivers to drive this.Why do rivers look the same they did a year ago? I don't agree. A year ago there were no rivers in the game, for a start. The push to turn rivers from a tech demo to something we could put in game was a long one. It in theory sounds simple but being built on all-new tech it meant that it touched a lot of systems and that all had to be accounted for. That all happened this time last year. Then, most of my new river work has been on the new auto placement tool. This assesses a planet on scale and produces river systems around it. That's like an entirely new tool with some fairly major algorithms involved. Only since then, I've been working again on visual improvements. And I'm fairly confident in saying thee rivers have completely transformed since the version that you can currently explore. Tldr, the Vanduul mask is not a good representation of the future of in-game earnables. It was a premature attempt (my fault). The dev team has far more exciting and complex plans when it comes to looting, and I'm really excited to share more when we can. (9/5)If Zyloh is reading this.. the Vanduul mask hunt was a huge success.. I donno why you think otherwise. Most ppl were excited and gave it a try including me even though I didnt make it up to 50. It was way more engaging than going around outposts opening boxes. The community team made a good competition.. the design team made an Easter Egg hunt. You did it the right way ZylohIt's not that the concept/idea wasn't a success, but rather the execution that I believe fell short. Gen12 generates significantly less draw calls. The render thread is now faster than the main thread, which leaves overhead for a GPU-driven FPS boost.(I know nothing about what these words really mean, just what I could derive from his explanation xvx)Less draw calls is incorrect ;)Less API calls like setting up the pipeline state before a draw.Also the RenderThread is not always slower than the MT, it really depends on the scene. For demonstrative purpose i picked one where it was, to make my point clear.But a faster RT can have so much more of an impact. Cores are idle sooner which can work on other stuff. You mentioned in the segment that the render thread will eventually go away completely. Is there a point in optimizing it at all if that's the case? Or will the optimizations still be kept, but all the processing will be moved off the CPU and onto the GPU with Vulkan?Optimizing the renderthread is part of getting rid of it. The term getting rid of it is not entirely true. The goal is to have one job which takes care of the pass submission. You could say this is what the renderthread does right now however it does so much more which we need to get rid of first. The majority of additional logic it was doing is gone now with Gen12 but there's still a bit left.GPUDriven rendering is fancy but not really possible within a gameengine as complex as ours these days. Afaik i don't know a single AAA engine who does that. Partially yes but everything? Extremely hard to manage, debug and work with.But we already have plans to move more to GPU driven rendering for Planets and such to get a really high density like MC FlightSim has. Sounds like motion blur will be a problem with 3.18 until they can add in an option to turn it off. It's one of the first things I do in any game is turn off all motion blur optionsIt won't be a problem. You can still turn it off. Ali Brown mentioned earlier in the year he is keen to improve it after the new renderer is in. If this is true, may I ask for the C2 paint for my M2?We initially made the decision to allow the paints to work for all versions of the Pisces for a few reasons. First, and most importantly, both versions received incredible submissions during Ship Showdown. They ended up neck and neck in judging, and for this reason, we decided to honor both as an exception.Second, the "parent" ships, the Carrack and Carrack expedition, share paints because they don't have functional differences - so we wanted to honor the Pisces in a way that matched. Once the goals for a particular patch have been finalized and the features are ready for integration and QA, we then add them to Release View as Tentative, not before. Graphics Driver Engineer here. What dev said is only half the story. Those shaders go through a 2 part compilation process. First to byte code which is passed to the driver and then the driver must compile it down to the hardware instruction set. So even though Star Citizen packed up all the bytecode into a cache if the driver encounters a change in any shader or any new shaders it will compile (which happens on your machine)Shader compile hitching and stutters is a very difficult problem to solve. If you do it on the background thread you might not have it ready in time and hitch, if you do it at a load screen your load screens could take a really long time.Drivers do their best to cache their end as well but each new or changed shader will get recompiled.And just to clarify a misunderstanding most people have: no all your shaders are not compiled up front or at load time and in the first few seconds minutes of building a cache then everything is smooth. Runtime or draw time compiles are common these days. Shaders are often written with several permutations generated based on runtime variables. Drivers may also defer compiling until the application actually tries to bind the shader.Q: Why does my game stutter every time I go to New Babbage if I've already compiled everything?A*: Likely a huge set of assets are being moved out of and into local graphics memory. We can't keep the entire game on your gpu. This memory movement is generally asynchronous scheduled by the OS. Its not a very parallel process and it goes over a limited PCIe pipe. When a texture isn't accessible by the gpu the card will stop and wait until it is. Thats likely why you hitch every time.Server might have to transmit position data or some state but that doesn't cause hitching that causes desync and rubber banding as others have correctly pointed out.Thanks for your answer.I'm not too familiar with the driver compilation into the hardware instruction set, but maybe you can shed some light there for me, as i would like to know more and i haven't been able to find a good source on it yet. When exactly does this happen? After we compiled the bytecode and call into creating the GPUShader? You said they defer this sometimes until the shader gets bound.
