Could you provide more specific detail? Portal upgrades simply allow for more energy to generate if you don't have any overflow (and with overflow, there's no need to upgrade unless you don't have enough friends gifting energy). Upgrades don't change the maps or battles

Okay, so you're talking about side quests/scroll battles. Portal upgrades have nothing to do with those, so if you had visible side quests before upgrading and they disappeared after, then you need to contact Customer Care about it so they can take a look. Regeneration of side battles (after having been won with 3 stars) is not unlimited. Random side quests regenerate about 1 every couple of hours up to a maximum; there may be less total depending on far along you are on the maps

Um, that total does not include the side quest series, only the initial battle. You wouldn't be able to have 20 single side quests, but could easily have 20 total side quests
For example, if you have a single, a double and a triple, that's 3 against the total 15 although you'd end up with 6 battles. The extras in a series aren't counted because until you clear the first of a series, you can't access the rest of them
