In the late 80s, the USSR was looking for an aircraft to drop recon units in enemy rearlines in future conflicts, at the same time this would've replaced other aircraft such as the An-26 and Yak-40 as a light transport aircraft. It was to be an STOL aircraft capable of taking off from unpaved surfaces.
The project's development was financially burdened by the collapse of the USSR, there were later attempts to revive it by the Russian Government but funding was cut despite a flying prototype being in the works and a 1:1 mockup already having been constructed. Further attempts to develop the plane saw the plane being marketed to be produced in Austria under the name MiG-110A, but ultimately ended in failure.
