the idea came from the AN/APS-154 ADV customization option as the sensor can be used for sea and land reconnaissance, also boeing's proposal back in 2010 to to replace the E-8 join stars with this sort of surface radar

RNZAF doesnt have this sensor but uses the p-8 for anti-sub and anti-ship surveillance

Its what the p-8 is for so

It makes sense to allow the p-8 to do surv jobs

Even more so if the p-3 can,, as the p-8 is the replacement/upgrade of the p-3

The p-8 is a maritime surveillance aircraft

#

Usually fitted with a sonar system and torpedos

#

Some are equipped with surface search radars and anti ship missiles

#

Which in fact the RNZAF is currently acquiring anti ship missiles
