General Information

Ingenuity is an extraterrestrial autonomous UAV NASA helicopter that operated on Mars from 2021 to 2024 as part of the Mars 2020 mission. It is equipped with a camera for its scientific payload, therefore capable of survillence

Specifications

Wingspan: 121 cm
Height: 49 cm
Width: 52 cm
Dry Mass: 1.8kg
Rotor Speed: 2700rpm
Blade Tip Speed: <Mach 0.7
Endurance: 2 minutes and 47 seconds
Range: 0.38nm( 704m, 2,310 ft)
Service Ceiling: 79ft (24m)
Maximum Speed: 19.4 knots
Climb Rate: 588 ft/m
Note: The Specifications given are on Mars' surface, whcih has a lower air pressure(about that of 87,000ft on Earth.

Pros:

There has never been an extraterrestrial aircraft in Aeronautica

This is a very important aircraft as it marks the first flight on Mars(Wright Flyer on Mars)

There is a prominent lack of Martian Helicopters in the game

The capability for this aircraft to take pictures may allow it to perform survillence

It is able to recharge in the sun due to it's solar panels, making it a special aircraft that's able to "refuel" inflight without fuel tanks

Cons:

The aircraft is very small and has many intricate details, making it more difficult to model than traditional aircraft

The specifications of the aircraft do not reflect that on Earth's surface, making it difficult to make accurate specifications on Earth

The introduction of inflight "refuelling" during flight and at daytime as a game mechanic may be difficult to implement

Ingenuity, nicknamed Ginny, is an autonomous NASA helicopter that operated on Mars from 2021 to 2024 as part of the Mars 2020 mission. Ingenuity made its first flight on 19 April 2021, demonstrating that flight is possible in the extremely thin atmosphere of Mars, and becoming the first aircraft to conduct a powered and controlled extra-terrestr...

(for your information, i am suggesting this aircraft with full seriousness, as i believe extraterrestial aircraft should be in the game)

how high could this thing go on earth tho

tidal hill
lusty tree
#

holy crap

tidal hill
#

and it has those specs at 87000ft

#

so its pretty impressive

lusty tree
#

fr

tidal hill
#

also it recharges inflight with solar panels

#

thats the selling point

lusty tree
#

i think they should just make it regen passively

lusty tree
#

not like this thing is good at jobs

tidal hill
#

way too complex

tidal hill
lusty tree
#

just make it slowly refuel lol

tidal hill
#

look it recharges on ground

#

also this thing should be able to land in any terrain

lusty tree
tidal hill
#

if it can land on martian land

zealous leaf
#

Would this only be for surveillance or other jobs too?

tidal hill
#

it takes pics

transports nothing

lusty tree

it's damn slow tho

20 knots

tidal hill
lusty tree

it'll be like balloon

lusty tree
tidal hill
#

it will be very good on thick air

#

maybe

#

because props generate more thrust i think

lusty tree
#

very interesting

tidal hill
#

its insane

lusty tree
#

they prob gna add this as epic rarity tho

#

if they even do

tidal hill
#

are they even gonna add this thing

lusty tree
#

i hope so

tidal hill
#

because thats the only spaceport

lusty tree
#

mars heli great

lusty tree
#

they have rockets there

tidal hill
#

or craftable?

lusty tree

ooo

tidal hill

are they gonna put crafts extremely high in the atmosphere

this thing qualifies for all things that are needed to be in aero

if a dev comes

idk...

grim axle
#

floating point will decimate it with it's size

#

same as asking DJI Mavic drones

tidal hill
#

it is revolutionary tho

grim axle
#

pretty much

tidal hill
#

oh damn

grim axle
tidal hill
#

whats wrong with floating point turning it into a piece of mess

#

i dont care if it looks like a 4d rotating tarus emitting a 1200mHz sine wave

#

i just wanna fly lil helicopter

#

little mars helicopter

tidal hill
#

an adorable little one

#

just look at it

#

would u say no to this little child

grim axle
tidal hill
#

ingenuity plushie would be smth i want

#

so its just because its too small and not because its martian

tidal hill
#

tbh this thing would fly great in earth's atmosphere

#

considering how good it performs at 87000ft environments

#

@lusty tree i am sorry to tell you but its been practically rejected

#

the dev has effectively kicked this little guy square in the face

tidal hill
lusty tree
#

damn

#

would have been funny

#

devs hate fun grrr

tidal hill
#

"saying it was too small"

lusty tree
#

lmao

tidal hill
#

he said it was too small and would get obiterated by floating point

#

ik lol it's a joke

#

i understand why this isn't gna be added

#

still kinda sad

grim axle
#

sorry, i recieved a lot of crap in my adress so sometimes taking stuff too serious

lusty tree
#

oh

grim axle
#

but yeah effectively it's due to small scale, uncertainty of what purpose and classification it would be

lusty tree
#

yea

#

also cos it's made for mars

grim axle
#

and after all it's still not earth? based, but that's not my role to call it so i'd let higher ups to decide

lusty tree
#

real

fickle stag
grim axle
#

not how it works here)

#

everything we make is relatively scaled

#

even fictional stuff if it has original dimensions known

fickle stag
#

that was the joke

lusty tree
#

when will the DHC-3 and the tucano be added?

#

it's been sitting in the viewer for a while

grim axle
#

it's broken so no idea

tidal hill
#

tell me that isnt cool

#

also this thing flies at conditions similar to 87000ft on earth

lusty tree
white stirrup
tidal hill
#

im not wrong

#

wait

#

i specified

#

"Extraterrestrial"

#

not Martian

#

thats different

#

Venus could potentially be fit to fly aircraft in

#

hecl

#

it would be even better

#

the thick atmosphere makes it so its easier to generate lift

white stirrup
#

anyway this is very cool
unfortunately the small scale of the game and floating point error would absolutely crush this aircraft

white stirrup
#

since it's barely .5 m wide (hull) and goes 19 kts

tidal hill
#

i dont care if it looks like a 4d rotating taurus

tidal hill
tidal hill
#

which is equivilent to like 87000ft on earth

white stirrup
tidal hill
#

so imagine if the rotors produce that much thrust with the insanely thin air

#

imagine

white stirrup
#

wdym 87k ft

tidal hill
#

as in the pressure on mars surface=87000ft on earth

tidal hill
tidal hill
#

the air pressure

#

therefore im saying that mars atmosphere is extremely thin

white stirrup
#

oh

tidal hill
#

yet the propellers still are sufficient to use that air

#

to propell itself

white stirrup
#

the atmospheric pressure at mars' surface = the pressure at 87k ft of altitude on earth ?

tidal hill
#

propellers produce significantly less thrust in thinner air because it produces thrust by moving air

white stirrup
tidal hill
#

the thinner the air=the less air is availble to be moved

tidal hill
tidal hill
#

but it'd produce similar thrust or more thrust

#

because it was designed to produce the lift needed on mars

#

therefore it's blades produce a shit ton of lift

#

this is different from thrust

#

because im sure of it

white stirrup
#

like for example
a propeller running in water will produce more thrust than in air

#

by that logic, a propeller running in solid concrete would produce even more thrust (since it's in a denser, more viscous material)
except the material is too thick for a propellor to even rotate

tidal hill
#

yeah

#

but also considering lift.

#

Lower pressure=less lift

white stirrup
#

do you think the mars helicopter's blades are structurally sound enough to spin in earth's atmosphere, fast enough to produce lift, without breaking or snapping ?

white stirrup
tidal hill
#

also u didnt account for the lower rotational speed due to increased drag

#

so it wont rotate at mach 0.7

white stirrup
tidal hill
#

the main thing is centrifugal force

tidal hill
#

i believe the thicker air would be more than the drag

#

it should outweigh the disadvantages

#

tbh helis move using lift

#

Cool, but the helicopter can't fly on Earth. Floating point will kill it too because of how small it is (sized slightly bigger than a human head).

#

Would be a interesting easter egg I could add as a prop as a memorial to the only mars aircraft.

#

But Id have to check with sizing first

tidal hill
#

put it in yoeshaw next to the wright flyer

raw hawk
#

You can see the small cable on Ingenuity during testing

elder frost
#

The issue with mars flight is the thin Atmosphere

raw hawk
#

Yes

#

But the test was on Earth which we can’t just avoid Earth’s Gravity if we want to

elder frost
#

Its atmosphere is 5 times thicker with I think 0.2 g more gravity to something like that

raw hawk
#

Mars?

elder frost
#

That’s at least twice the thrust

elder frost
raw hawk
#

Ingenuity can only lift off with the help of a cable support here on Earth
