Shrugbot Seaplane Suggestion #67
Prototype Amphibian
The Seversky SEV-3 was an amphibious single-engine monoplane, the first aircraft built by the Seversky Aircraft Corporation.
The most unique feature of the SEV-3 are its floats, which were able to rotate depending on landing surface. For flying and water landing, the floats would run parallel to the fuselage. For land operation, a strut raised the back section of the floats to give clearance for the rear landing gear. The front landing gear were fitted inside the floats.
The fuselage features 2 tandem cockpits with opening canopies, with occupancy for 3 people.
The SEV-3 was built in small numbers for export, but never saw eventful service, except for one curious limelight...
On September 15, 1935, an SEV-3 set the speed record for piston-engine amphibious aircraft at 199.86 knots, which stood for 49 years
