Shrugbot Seaplane Suggestion #64
Prototype Reconaissance
The Heinkel He 119 was a prototype high-speed reconnaissance bomber produced by Germany just before WW2.
The aircraft was quite literally designed to be record-breaking. In the name of lower drag, the concept of a standard cockpit was ditched for an innovative dome window at the front of the plane. The engine(s) powering this bullet were a pair of 12-cylinder Daimler-Benz DB-601 joined to a common gearbox, which produced over 4500 total horsepower, powering it on unfathomable speeds for the time. *This seems eerily similar to the formula which latter produced the DH Mosquito
*
The design was so promising that 8 prototypes were constructed all at once. They each have slight variations with the latter few being armed with MG-15 machine guns. There was also a floatplane variant
On November 22, 1937, The 4th prototype of the He 119 set a world record: 1,000 km with a load of 1,000 kg at a speed of 502 km/h. A latter attempt to better the record unfortunately ended with a crash. As a result, Heinkel refrained from attempting to set further records with the He 119.
Ultimately, the He 119 was never used in combat. But it does remain an exquisite looking aircraft.
