A complete railway layout overhaul and mooving trains would bring live into the map. Even if they just drive between 2 stations. P.s. (I am thinking of trying to make such a system myself soon so...)

regarding free models, virtually every dev looks down upon those who do use them in their games

why? This is because, you're essentially benefitting of someone elses work, and most of the time you're using it without the original owner even knowing it. Even worse, what you may be using is a leaked model, which the original dev has probably spent days working on.
