The Start of the Douglas Journey. The DC-1 was a Prototype Airliner for TWA only. After a fatal crash with a Fokker F10 Trimotor, TWA looked to 5 manufacturers to build a Trimotor that can seat up to 12 people. Douglas won in the end despite it not being like a Trimotor and exceeding all requirements by TWA. The design influenced both the latter for the DC-2 and the DC-3, which would later become the most successful aircraft in history with over 16,000 being produced, combining variants from Military, and other countries who made specific adjustments to their respective variants. The Prototype was exchanged between multiple companies/people from TWA to Lord Fobes, then to the L.A.P.E in Spain, and finally transferred to Iberia where the Aircraft was damaged beyond repair on October 4th, 1940, after a forced landing. (That was yesterday but like 84 years ago, holy shit). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_DC-1
The Douglas DC-1 was the first model of the famous American DC (Douglas Commercial) commercial transport aircraft series. Although only one example of the DC-1 was produced, the design was the basis for the DC-2 and DC-3, the latter being one of the most successful aircraft in the history of aviation.
