Can't update existing emotes?

I have a set of emotes I need to update with newer transparent versions. Is there a way to do that easily? After looking at similar topics:

The content of the emotes will not change, they are just removing the white background.

I noticed the merge button, but it didn't do anything. I saw it only works for moderators.

If I can't update them myself, can I request a merge for them?

Replacing an existing emote with a new image isn’t allowed, as it could be misused by bad actors

instead, upload a new emote and encourage users to switch from the old one.
