My twitch page usually runs normal for a bit but then the page freezes (stream still plays but cant do anything) and then it says "page unresponsive" and I have to restart the tab. FFZ with 7TV emotes works fine but having 7TV enabled on my browser will crash the page. No other emote extensions enabled (bttv and ffz) and it still crashes. Sometimes it will work fine and after a few minutes it would freeze but become responsive again other times it will just crash entirely and I need to open a new tab. I have hardware acceleration on as well. Thank you.
#7tv crashing my twitch page on chrome

are you using 7tv nightly?
do you happen to have multiple twitch tabs open when it happens?
only one twitch tab

sometimes I have a youtube tab open not playing a video but it still crashes when its just one tab
you get this popup from chrome
which gives options
i dont remember their names but essentially
keep waiting or close the page?
yeah it gives me that popup
sometimes it doesnt then it'll unfreeze but other times it will give me that
bad news is that I don't have a certain or immediate advice on how to fix it
you could try lowering this setting
the issue might be with how browsers handle freeing up memory
would you be able to test if the same thing happens on firefox?
I would need to download firefox but yeah I can try
I used to then when it started crashing I uninstalled them and it still crashes with just 7tv installed
okay thanks, that helps a lot
it doesn't sound like a compatibility issue
I am experiencing this as well from time to time, and personally I just use chatterino instead
ofc that's not a solution
I'm not a dev but if I had to guess what's happening is that out of emote platforms 7tv has highest allowed dimensions and file sizes for emotes, so if you are in a chat with a lot of "heavy" emotes added this could eventually build up causing the website to become unresponsive if Chrome doesn't properly free up memory
next time it happens can you check task manager and see if the chrome process has high memory usage? make sure to expand the category, each tab in chrome should have its own subprocess
also, if chrome/the tab isn't completely dead and unresponsive, please try to go into the dev tools (F12) -> console and see if there is anything in there, those logs could help us identify the issue
in my case it doesn't happen too often
i think it's if I go into a lot of streams without closing the tab and keep it open for quite some time
u said u tried turning off emote extensions, maybe try other extensions as well
turn half of them off
and when the tab freezes on chrome the stream still plays but I cant click anything nothing highlights when hovered chat doesnt move emotes dont move and the player settings dont show up when I hover over the stream
yeah
how much RAM do you have and is it nearing 100% total when that happens or not really?
same as me
doing some testing right now
it might be due to an extension I have on idk
as soon as I added dark reader to firefox it ran slower
got it to crash again on chrome and memory usage didn't change
gonna try removing dark reader
interesting, I have dark reader too
I disabled it for twitch now
will see what happens
but yeah that's something that devs are already looking into, but it's a tricky thing to investigate
I mean if they're looking into thats fine I can wait and just use ffz for now
still crashed without dark reader
I'll just use ffz for now but if anything changes lmk
on chrome or firefox?
chrome
it ran fine but started buffering the stream after 7tv and dark reader
okay
if you don't mind testing if firefox eventually crashes it would help a lot
but if not it's fine, sorry for the inconvenience
I have also tried regular 7tv (not nightly) and that crashes as well
I have this issue as well on Brave browser
I lowered the amount of message lines to 90 lets see if that works
