I am suggesting that it be optional for chat to not populate all at once when scrolling back down after chat has been paused, and instead have new messages populate in realtime while still letting you remain paused in place where you're at. This way, you can scroll down and read the new ones at your own pace instead of have to find where the new messages started. This is the way the native twitch chat works and I feel it's much better. As 7tv is now, I find it overwhelming to catch back up, I often have to scroll back up again anyways to read some of the new messages, so I'm just caught in a cycle of [pause chat/populate all new messages/pause chat]
