The one I’ve seen doesn’t even do that. It just deleted the messages and posted them as chat logs

ok so, in Photoshop, this is a black to white gradient at 16 bits per channel, at 1024 pixels wide, zoomed in on 1 section to show that a single band is clearly visible and is about 4 pixels wide (some are only 3)
obviously on an 8 bit monitor you can see the banding
(and an 8 bit screenshot, I'm aware)

but if you have an 8 bit document and make the same exact test, you can see that Photoshop adds dithering on its own
which looks much smoother on an 8 bit display

I failed to realize how much of a difference there really is between numerically small shades

also it turns out that the gpu isn't doing any dithering
it just gets clamped
so you were right there
