if instead of a circle getting bigger it used physics to instead have blood trail down a wall or down somebody's leg. this has been done several times in video games but only some have really done it right one of those games in called overgrowth created by wolf fire games. they thankfully made lots of documentation on how they did it here is their first example of blood dripping on character entitys this can work well with other suggestions that people have made like heavy artery bleeds and dismemberment this can also pair very well for reactions with the active ragdoll system making reactions to hits way more fluid.
